Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
